Back to the 60s at Hotel Tiffany - Laoag City

After a harrowing experience at the Texicano Hotel – do I have to use that word really? – ok, not so harrowing, perhaps just a little unsettling couple of hours stay at the Texicano Hotel, we decided to transfer to another place before the darkness envelop the somewhat spooky ambience of the old hotel building with its wooden hall flooring and grimy room ceiling.

We found this colorful façade along Gen. Segundo Ave. very near the Provincial Capitol and the Sinking Belfry and most of the attractions of the city.

We were greeted by the cheerful reception staff and luckily they do accept credit cards.

It is easy to spot the hotel because of its vibrantly-colored building dominantly in turquoise blue with stripes of yellow and red.  It’s a three-story building plus the ground floor, the leitmotif is art-deco, reminiscent of circa 60s - 70s.

Access to the rooms on the first to the third floor is through the stairs, no elevator, each floor has its hallway, photo frames of Lennon, Monroe, and other 1960s American celebrities hanging on the walls.  The floor is likewise splattered with stars, another reception area is on the first floor selling all sorts of comfort food, coffee vending machine, personal hygiene supplies, etc. 

The guy on the first floor – and that’s what I’m good at, forgetting people’s names –  is very friendly, in fact all of the staff are amiable.

The room we had was clean with real wooden beds, comfortable cushion and leatherette headboard, the walls painted in light blue with flesh polka dots, thick curtains to block the sunlight, it was very pleasant.  Flat panel TV is hanging on the wall with CATV cable channels, a long desk table with several drawers.  The bathroom is a good size, clean white towels, a small shower stall separated by glass panel with hot and cold shower, and most of all the internet wifi is excellent inside the room.

At the ground floor just beside the reception area is the hotel’s restaurant – the Macy’s Diner – which complete the 70s era theme.  Checkered black and white floor, aluminum chairs, leatherette couches, red balloons on the ceilings, an old fully functioning jukebox in the middle, black & white Elvis Presley posters, “Interstate” road signage, and the food is affordably priced.  The pancake and bacon with brewed coffee breakfast cost (I think) P100.  Macy’s Diner serves inexpensive breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We paid P1,170 for our twin room, airconditioned and it can get really cold at night.  The Junior Suite which has 1 Queen and 1 Single bed costs P1,405, and the bigger Family Room which was mistakenly first given to us with 1 Queen and 1 Single bed, a mini dining area, and small fridge is at P1,665 a night.

All in all, it was a very comfortable stay at Hotel Tiffany.  The only resentment I had was wasting the P450 we’ve paid for a couple of hours stay at the Texicano, just because my stinginess has gotten into me, when we could’ve spend a bit more and gone straight to a better place like this one.
